The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) raises questions about the future of traditional search engines. However, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, emphasizes that despite technological advancements, the fundamental needs of users remain constant. “Technology continues to evolve, but search requirements remain constant,” Pichai noted during an interview at the Business, Government & Society Forum at Stanford University (2024 Business, Government & Society Forum – Welcome and Opening Keynote), where he was asked about his vision for the future of web search in ten years.
How will Artificial Intelligence change Google Search?
Technology Evolves
According to Sundar Pichai, Google does not plan to rely solely on AI solutions like chatbots over the next ten years. Pichai does not believe that the search needs and habits of users will change significantly. “Only the technology changes,” says the CEO of Google and its parent company, Alphabet. He emphasizes the importance of a balanced offering that provides users with diversity and comprehensive information. The search engine will continue to utilize a wide array of sources to ensure a versatile information offering.
Over the past decades, Google has continuously adapted its technology—from simple text results to a more complex integration of images, videos, and direct responses to user queries. This development towards AI is a logical response to new challenges, such as the integration of ChatGPT by Microsoft.
Search Generative Experience: A Step Further
The project Search Generative Experience (SGE), introduced a year ago, demonstrates how Google goes beyond traditional search results by answering user queries directly in a chatbot-like format, while still providing links to further content.
AI as an Extension, Not a Replacement
The integration of AI in Google is seen by Pichai not as a replacement, but as an enhancement of existing search technologies. Representing “the broad spectrum of views held by people around the world” is seen as the greatest challenge.
